MATCH REPORT: Ashgold survives RS Bekane scare to emerge as 3-2 winners

Obuasi Ashanti Gold has defeated RS Bekane 3-2 at the Len Clay Sports Stadium following a nervy encounter in the first leg of the second round of this year’s CAF Confederations Cup.

The two clubs from different parts of the content honoured a first leg date today in hopes of getting a decent result before going into the second leg a fortnight later.

A pulsating encounter at the home grounds of the Miners produced as many as 5 goals with the Moroccan club succumbing to a narrow defeat.

Following a good start to the match, experienced Eric Donkor shot Ashgold into the lead after just 16 minutes. The side built on that lead and got a second through leading marksman Shafiu Mumuni on the brink of halftime.

Despite trailing by two goals, RS Bekane did not back down but recovered at the interval and resumed the second half with improved performance. Their zeal paid off in no time when Mohammed Aziz scored to reduce the deficit.

The away side grew in confidence and restored parity with a second goal on the day on the 57th minute courtesy a strike from Mohammed Farehane.

At this point, the Len Clay Sports Stadium was stunned but continues cheers from a section of the crowd steered the players on, helping them to regain control of the match.

Amos Addai restored the lead for Ashanti Gold on the hour mark which eventually proved to be the decider, handing the side a 3-2 win.

With both sides targeting qualification to the group stage of the competition, they will need to put in much work in the second leg in order to achieve that goal.
