Mauricio Pochettino Claims Tottenham's Squad Lacks Quality After Champions League Elimination

Published on: 22 November 2016

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has suggested that the club need to buy better players, after they crashed out of the Champions League on Tuesday evening.

A 2-1 defeat to Monaco confirmed Spurs' elimination from Europe's elite competition and means that the highest place they can now finish in group E is third.

Harry Kane's 52nd minute penalty proved in vein, as goals from Dijibril Sidibe andThomas Lamar condemned Tottenham to their third loss of the campaign following another disappointingperformance at the Stade Louis II.

Speaking after the match, Pochettino suggested his side lacked the quality that is required to compete in Europe and hinted that the club will need to buy new players, if they wish to progress further in the competition in future seasons.

The Spurs' boss toldSky Sports:"It is good for us to learn from this for the future if we are going to be in the Champions League next season and try to compete in that and the Premier League, maybe we need to make changes.

"It was a good challenge for us to show the real level. It's true after two-and-a-half years we closed the gap between the top clubs. But to be competitive in the Champions League and Premier League we need to show more - and maybe to add real quality."

Tottenham will now host CSKA Moscow in matchday six to determine who finishes third in the group and subsequently qualifies for the knockout phase of the Europa League.

And whilst Pochettino said his team would benefit from a run in the competition, he admitted his players have struggled with the added workload that comes with playing in Europe.

He added:"I think it's better to be in the Europa League, it would be good for the club. We are in a process and a period where we need to improve.

"To play Saturday then Tuesday-Wednesday is like you play the Premier League continuously. We struggled to be ready to compete in every game."

Although Spurs have struggled in the Champions League this season, they remain unbeaten in the Premier League and Pochettino has now urged his players to forget the defeat to Monaco, as a clash with league leader's Chelsea awaits this coming Saturday.

The Tottenham manager continued:"Maybe we feel bad now, disappointed, but tomorrow is another day. We need to be optimistic in the club. We need to compete. Saturday will be a very big game, and go to Chelsea and try to win the game."

"It was a very competitive game like in Wembley. We didn't have enough luck, didn't show enough quality. We are now not in the next round of the Champions League so we need to forget and be ready for the next game against Chelsea."
