McGeady sets sights on promotion

Published on: 14 July 2019

Winger Aiden McGeady has targeted helping Sunderland gain promotion next season, having signed a one-year contract extension with the Black Cats.

The 33-year-old Republic of Ireland international moved to the Stadium of Light two years ago and has scored 21 goals in 72 appearances for the Wearsiders to date.

And McGeady is more than happy to stay put, with his deal now stretching to the summer of 2021.

He told the club's official website: "I'm looking forward to the new season and, like everyone else associated with the club, I'm confident that we can achieve promotion during the upcoming campaign."

Black Cats boss Jack Ross added: "Aiden was an important player for us last season and he has a real desire to bring success to the football club.

"His quality on the pitch speaks for itself, but he also brings a wealth of experience to the dressing room. I'm delighted that he has committed his future to the club."

Last season Sunderland finished in fifth place in League One, before edging out Portsmouth 1-0 on aggregate in the play-off semi-finals.

However, their promotion hopes were thwarted as Charlton Athletic netted a last-gasp winner to secure a 2-1 victory in the play-off final at Wembley.

Sunderland are 4/1 to win the League One title next season, while they are 6/4 to gain promotion.
