Le Messager de Ngozi have been crowned champions of the Burundi Primus Ligue with one match to spare after beating Inter Star 3-0 at the Stade Urukundo in Mwumba on Saturday.

The victory took Le Messager to 61 points, earning them an unassailable lead of five points ahead of second-placed Musongati who drew 1-1 with Kayanza United on the penultimate day of the season.

Ngozi and Musongati were tied neck-to-neck when the league resumed after a month’s break, but the former ensured they kept their pace, winning three of their last five games while Musongati only won once.

During the penultimate match that handed them the crown, Olivier Bayizere, Iddy Museremu, and Arthur Nibikora struck the back of the net once each to ensure victory and a second league crown for the Ngozi District-based side.

Defending champions Aigle Noir are third with 45 points, same as Dynamik and Flambeau du Centre, and will look to win their last game of the campaign to ensure they retain a top-three finish.

Meanwhile, Lydia Ludic, Ngozi City, and Les Lierres will be relegated as they are assured of finishing in the bottom three positions.
