Cristiano Ronaldo can be forgiven for hating the bust that was unveiled in his honour at the new Aeroporto Cristiano Ronaldo last March.

And Chelsea hero Michael Essien may be suppressing similar emotions after a bizarre statue of him was erected in the city of Accra.

Essien wrote his name into the Stamford Bridge history books during his nine-year spell in west London, helping the Blues win nine trophies.

And his exploits with Ghana, for whom he’s made 58 senior appearances and captained on occasion, have added to his global fame.

Essien has now joined a lengthy list of footballers who have had their achievements acknowledged in their homeland.

But he may be wishing the sculptor that was commissioned to depict him had rejected the offer.

Images of a bizarre statue of the box-to-box midfielder are circulating online.

And although it’s pretty obvious who the effigy represents, it’s not the best effort there’s ever been.

Shown playing for Chelsea, Essien’s metal body is out of proportion, while his face is far too jagged.
