Napoli Winger Dries Mertens Explains Strange Dog Celebration After Important Roma Win

Published on: 04 March 2017

Belgian forward Dries Mertens stole the headlines following Napoli's win away at Roma with one of the most bizarre celebrations ever seen on a football pitch.

Napoli picked up a massive win on Saturday afternoon as they moved within two points of second placed Roma with a 2-1 victory at the Stadio Olimpico.

The loss has seriously dented Roma's chances of winning the Serie A title and with league leaders Juventus currently holding a seven point advantage with a game in hand on their closest title rivals, it would appear that the Scudetto is once again heading to Turin.

Dries Mertens was the star of the show as his two goals secured all three points for Napoli, but his celebration was the major talking point.

After opening the scoring in the first half, Mertens raced over to the corner flag and pretended to act like a dog. Check it out yourselves:

Later that night, Mertens explained his actions with a picture on Instagram with his dog Juliette.

Napoli face Real Madrid in the Champions League Round of 16 second leg in midweek so expect more celebration antics from the Belgian should he get on the scoresheet.
