The new Ben Arfa? Why Newcastle should sign Atsu permanently

Published on: 01 November 2016

If there is one thing Newcastle United fans love, it is exciting wide players with bags of flair to bring you to the edge of your seat.

In the 90s they had David Ginola, and most recently they had Hatem Ben Arfa, and today they have Christian Atsu, but only temporarily. The Ghana international moved to Tyneside on a season long loan from Chelsea, and has impressed during his short time under Rafael Benitez.

The 24-year-old moved to Chelsea in 2013, but has never actually played for the club, with the Magpies being his fifth loan move since moving to England.

Atsu has had difficult spells at both Bournemouth and Everton in the Premier League, but appears to have found a home at Newcastle in the Championship. On his first start for the club, his wonder goal won the Magpies all three points away to Rotherham United.

Every time the winger puts on the black and white shirt, he excites the St James' Park faithful with his incredible energy and pace, terrifying opposition defences and creating chances for the Newcastle forwards. Atsu appears settled and enjoying life under Benitez, like a lot of players at Newcastle right now.

The last real flair player to put on a Newcastle shirt was the aforementioned Ben Arfa, who lit up St James' Park on many an occasion with his obscene dribbling ability.

While it was not always a happy time for the Frenchman on Tyneside, with his work rate and fitness ultimately ruining his career in the North East, he remains a fan favourite.

Atsu has the same ability to excite fans and have them wondering with glee at what he might do next when he gets the ball.
