Newcastle Star Aleksandar Mitrovic Could Come to Rue Tottenham Red Card

Published on: 24 July 2016

Newcastle United striker Aleksandar Mitrovic could end up regretting his sending off against Tottenham Hotspur on the last day of the lastseason.

The Serbian was handed a straight red card for an ugly challenge on Spurs right-back Kyle Walker, for which he was given a four-game ban.

This means that the 21-year-old will now miss the first four Championship fixtures, and will have to watch from the stands as Ayoze Perez and Dwight Gayle get their chance first.

With Perez grabbing three pre-season goals so far, and Gayle providing a couple of promising performances, Mitrovic will have to sit and stew while the pair try to impress andgrab goals against Fulham, Huddersfield, Reading and Bristol City.

When he becomes available after that initial slew of fixtures, there is no guarantee that Mitrovic will come back into the starting line up after serving his time - especially if Toon manager Rafa Benitez signs another striker.

Many Geordies are excited to see the Serbian in the Championship, and many expect him to bag a lot of goals in the second tier. After hitting nine goals in his debut Premier League season, there are certainly improvements to be made, but that will come with working more with Benitez and gaining further experience.

In Perez and Gayle, Newcastle have two strikers who will cause problems for the opposition at any time, and if Benitez is gearing up to play both of them at the same time then the route for Mitrovic back into the team will be crowded.

Especially after paying £10m for the former Crystal Palace striker, Benitez will fill obliged to give him a run of games in the team to prove himself, and if he starts to bag the goals it's only natural that he would be kept in the starting line up.

For Mitrovic, he will need to temper that aggression going into future games. Despite only getting four yellow cards throughout the campaign, the former Anderlecht man was sent off twice - with the tackle against Walker being the worst.

He came to Tyneside with a reputation for being a hothead, and if actions like this continue it's going to blight his entire career.
