Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce has opened up on the absence of Ghana international Christian Atsu in their 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace in the English Premier League on Saturday.

Atsu was not in the match day squad for the clash at Selhurst Park as they lost narrowly in match week 27 of the on-going campaign.

The 28-year-old, who usually starts from the bench for the Magpies, has made 18 appearances and provided three assists so far this season.

Speaking after the game, Steve Bruce revealed why the former Chelsea winger didn't feature for the club.

"Christian Atsu is sick, and Yoshi Moto also. That is why they did not play," he said.

A lone strike from Patrick Van Aanholt in the 44th minute was enough to earn Palace all three points at home and condemned Newcastle to their 12th defeat of the season.

The result leaves Newcastle United on the 14th with 31 points.
