Nobody can influence my job, says ex-Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah

Former Ghana coach, Kwesi Appiah has insisted nobody can influence his job.

The 62-year-old is one of the few local coaches who has led the team to several tournaments.

However, the influence of the Ghana Football Association [GFA] in player call-ups to the national team has dominated the headlines following Ghana’s early exit during the 2022 World Cup.

Quizzed if he could be influenced, Appiah cited that Dr Kofi Amoah, who was the President of the Normalization Committee tried to impose Sulley Muntari in his team for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations [AFCON] but he declined.

“Dr Kofi Amoah suggested that I should include Sulley Muntari in my squad for the tournament but as I have said, for me, once I have my team, nobody can change the team,” he told Joy Prime.

Meanwhile, Appiah, who led the Black Stars to qualify for the 2014 World Cup has confirmed that he will apply for the vacant job.

The national team is currently without a head coach following Otto Addo’s resignation.

“If they put it out there, I will apply,” the 62-year-old told Joy Prime.

Appiah’s last job with the Black Stars was during the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt where the team exited at the Round of 16.
