In 1972, on Matchday 3 of Serie A 1972/1973, Milan defeated Atalanta 9-3 at San Siro: this is the match with the highest number of goals in the history of our Championship, exactly 12. The first half ended 4-1 with Rossoneri goals from Prati (16'), Bigon (30'), Rivera (35') and Benetti (40') and Nerazzurri goal from Divina (33'); in the second half, Milan scored 5 more times with Chiarugi (50'), Rivera (52'), Prati (55'), Bigon (64') and again Prati (90'), while Atalanta scored with Ghio (54') and Carelli (88').
