Newcastle United are interested inmaking a transfer bid for Manchester United youngster Paddy McNair, reported theExpress.

The Magpies will go up against local rivals Sunderland for the player, who are now managed by former Red Devils' boss David Moyes.

Moyes knows the player well from his season in charge of the Manchester club and wants to make him their first signing of the season.

However, Toon manager Rafa Benitez can offer McNair more first team chances on Tyneside, as the busy Championship schedule will mean the Spaniard will have to rotate his squad in order to keep players fresh.

The Northern Ireland international would be a good addition to United's squad. He will be able to fill the role of fourth centre-back, and would be able to come into the team if there is an injury if when Benitez has to rotate players.

Currently, Paul Dummett or Kevin Mbabu would have to step in and take up that position - but that would take away cover from the flanks - and in Dummett's case, remove the best left-back in the team from his position.

This rumour is further proof that Newcastle are continuing to operate in the transfer market with one eye on the future, and their signings this season have always employed a good mix of youth and experience.

McNair would be the youngest player to have been signed by Benitez on Tyneside, but that doesn't mean he's an evergreen rookie. While the defender hasn't played a lot of games for Manchester, he has still picked up 11 international caps for Northern Ireland.

During the 2015/2016 season, he started 12 times and came off the bench on four other occasions, but has dropped down the pecking order due to the emergence of Chris Smalling and former manager Louis van Gaal's preference for playing Daley Blind alongside him.

There is clearly room to improve with McNair's game, that much is so, but United should chase this signing and bring in a youngster who can only get better with time.

That early spell in his career showed that the 21-year-old can mix it with the big boys, and now he should be given the chance to prove himself on Tyneside.
