Peter Bosz says his Borussia Dortmund side will need to "do other things" if they are to beat Bayern Munich on Saturday.
Dortmund have taken just one from point their last three games, slipping from first to second in the Bundesliga table, with RB Leipzig sitting only one point behind them.
Having lost 4-2 away to Hannover, drawn against Eintracht Frankfurt and seen Leipzig end their 41-game unbeaten run at the Westfalenstadion, Dortmund have gone from being five points clear at the top to three points behind their rivals Bayern.
The Black and Yellows have been playing a very offensive style so far this season, which has seen them concede several goals from counter-attacks in recent games.
Head coach Bosz admitted in his pre-match press conference that his team must tweak their style.
He told bvb.de: "The opponent knows how we play. Now it's up to us to do other things again.
"If you are not brave against Bayern, you have no chance. If we win, we will again be the leaders so we will do our best to win this game.
"In particular, it is about being more secure in the defensive process and, at the same time, making more use of the numerous scoring opportunities."
When asked about the lack of goals from his star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Bosz said: "In September, Aubameyang sometimes made a goal from half a chance, now he lacks a bit of luck.
"The best medicine for him is to score the first goal.
"Two top teams, number one against number two. Everything is there for a top game."
Bayern boss Jupp Heynckes is keen for his players to forget about their recent form ahead of the latest edition of Der Klassiker.
He told fcbayern.com: "When two teams of this calibre meet, what's happened before goes out of the window.
"You can't be so naive as to go there and think Borussia will cave in and we can win with one eye shut. It will be a very intensive and close-fought match. For me there's no clear favourite.
"We can improve again on Tuesday's game (against Celtic). I want my team to go the extra mile."
Dortmund will have to contend with their former striker Robert Lewandowski.
The Pole will be back in action after recovering from a hamstring injury which kept him out of the Champions League victory over Celtic.
The Bundesliga's joint top-scorer notched two against his former side last season, in a 4-1 win at the Allianz Arena.
The clubs' recent head-to-head record makes for fascinating reading, with both sides coming out on top twice in their last five games, with one draw.
Bayern have found it harder at the Westfalenstadion, however, winning on only three of their last 11 visits.
