Manchester United were willing to pay up to €35 million for Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly during the summer transfer window prior to signing Raphael Varane from Real Madrid.

Koulibaly has been linked with Man United in every summer window for at least four years and there was undoubtedly interest from the English club which was reciprocated by the player. Unfortunately for both parties, a move never came to fruition.

The Senegal international has consistently been one of the best central defenders in Serie A since making his debut for the club back in 2014 as a 23-year-old following his move from Genk.

Since then, the now-30-year-old has been linked with some of the biggest clubs in European football but Napoli’s price tag for the player always seemed to be a blockage for the centre-back to ever get a transfer away from the club.

According to Corriere dello Sport journalist Antonio Giordano, Manchester United tried to open talks again with Napoli for Koulibaly’s signature back in the previous summer transfer window. United were ready to offer around £30 million but Napoli’s president, the infamous Aurelio De Laurentiis wanted closer to £45 million and so the move never materialised.
