Ramos puts the record straight

Published on: 09 June 2019

Sergio Ramos has made it clear that he wants to stay at Real Madrid for the rest of his career although the 33-year-old insists he did have the opportunity to move to China.

Ramos has been with Real since 2005 and has been a stalwart at the heart of the team's defence.

However, Real endured a very disappointing 2018/19 campaign and boss Zinedine Zidane is expected to make sweeping changes to his squad this summer.

Ramos says he is not looking to leave the Santiago Bernabeu though and is keen to spend the rest of his career with the La Liga giants.

"I want to make it very clear," he said. "Lots of things have been speculated. I am a madridista, I want to finish my career here. I want to leave the past behind, the bad season. I want to retire here.

"The offer is on the table [from China] and I spoke to the club and the president. But I never wanted to go to China. I didn't ask to be let go. A lot of things were speculated. But I have a wedding in two weeks and I wanted to clear this up.

"If a player comes in and earns more, that's a good sign because it means he's a 'crack'. The financial side doesn't interest me, as long as I have a contract and I'm happy.

"Everyone has what he deserves and comparisons are hateful. I would play for Madrid for free."

Real Madrid are 6/4 to win the La Liga title in 2019/20 while Barcelona can be backed at 4/7.
