Ranieri looks forward with Fulham

Claudio Ranieri said he wants to forget the past and look forward to a new challenge with Fulham.

The Italian was appointed the Cottagers new manager this week, replacing Slavisa Jokanovic with his brief to try and prevent an immediate return to the Championship.

I am an ambitious man. I have good players, but now I have to choose the players who show me fighting spirit.

Their return to the Premier League has, so far, been a disappointing one resulting in the managerial change.

Fulham are currently bottom of the league with just one win from their 12 games so far, sitting three points adrift of safety.

Ranieri's immediate priority in the international break is to work on the defence which has conceded 31 goals, by far the most in the league.

He confirmed that improving their defensive work was essential but concentrated, in his first press conference as Fulham manager, on getting the right spirit within the club.

He told the assembled media: "If I have one quality, it's to forget what happened yesterday. I always look forward.

"I am an ambitious man. I have good players, but now I have to choose the players who show me fighting spirit.

"With quality, fighting spirit and union – and the fans understand this – we are all together. I need the support of our fans."

His first match in his new role is a crucial one, at home to another struggling team Southampton next Saturday.

Fulham are 13/8 to win the game with Saints, just above the drop zone 17/10, with the draw 11/5.

Since leaving Leicester who he guided to the Premier League title in 2016, Ranieri spent a season in charge of Nantes in Ligue 1 in France.

Fulham are 4/7 to be relegated at the end of the season while Southampton are 4/1.
