RB Leipzig Would Be an Even Greater Fairytale Than Leicester But Not One That People Want to See

Published on: 22 December 2016

Despite being comfortably beaten 3-0 by Bayern Munich on Wednesday night, RB Leipzig still go into the winter break in Germany within touching distance of the top of the Bundesliga table - a mere three points off the pace set by the reigning champions and European giants.

An unthinkable win against Bayern would even have sent Leipzig top with a three point margin of their ownas they continue the most unlikely of title challenges.

As far as football fairytales go, any club would hard pressed to better what Leicester City achieved in England last season. With a squad full of cheap misfits who hadn't made the grade elsewhere, the Foxes broke the 'big club' stranglehold in style to lift the Premier League title.

Just 12 months earlier they had required a miracleto just stay in the division after flirting with relegation until the spring. They had only been promoted for the start of that season and had been down in the third tier of the English league ladder only a few short years before that.

And yet, should Leipzig topple Bayern this season and conquer Germany it would be even more remarkable and shocking.

The club was only formed in May 2009 when global energy drink giant Red Bull formalised their plans to invest in German football after previously building teams in Austria and New York, and, following an initial partnership with SSV Markranstadt, began playing in the fifth tier.

The goal for Leipzig was to reach the Bundesliga within eight years. They did it in seven. The ultimate ambition is now to claim a first title for the east Germancity of Leipzig since 1913 when VfB Leipzig won the national championship.

Also consider the fact that Bayern are much stronger than any of the sides that Leicester finished above in the Premier League last season, and have won each of the last four Bundesliga titles at a canter.

One would think that such an incredible rise from the bottom to the very top in so short a space of time would be heralded. Everyone should be behind them to go and become champions, but few are. The story of RB Leipzig is not a fairytale that people are buying into.

When Bayern scored their second on Wednesday nightand the score-line was flashed up on the big screen during the game between Cologne and Bayer Leverkusen there were cheers. German fans don't like Bayern, but they hate Leipzig, a team that fully embodies the modern commercialism in 21st century.

Loud cheer in Köln when the Bayern 2-0 Leipzig score line flashes up on the screen - yes, people really do hate Leipzig more than Bayern.

Leipzig are owned and run by a multinational corporation in a country where fan ownership ship is seen as the holy grail. Everything they have is false, even those 'humble' beginnings in the fifth tier when they had to buy a license to play league football from SSV Markranstadt.

The journey is more remarkable than any seen before, but there is no magic to make it special.
