The 33-year-old currently applies his trade in Spain with Real Betis after leaving Hamburg on a free transfer last summer.

Van der Vaart has 109 caps for the Netherlands, the side he used to captain. It is also where he knows the current Reading boss from as he and Jaap Stam both featured for their national side when knocked out of Euro 2004 in the semi-final by Portugal.

The attacking midfielder isavailablethis summer after being told he has no future with current side Real Betis, after only one year with the club.

The Royals have already had a busy transfer window signing Denzell Gravenberch, Joseph Mendes, John Swift, Joey van der Berg, Anssi Jaakkola and Roy Beerens allwithin the first month of the window.

Jaap Stam isstill recruiting for his new side claiming he is still looking for two or three more signingsas they look to build on last seasons poor 17th place finish.

The club remain heavily interested in signing wingerAdam Reach from Middlesbrough and a new centre back with both Leicester'sLiam Moore and Manchester United's Tyler Blackett the preferred options.

They are also exploring the option of signing of Van der Vaart after informal talks were held.

Although his high wages are expected to be a hurdle in any negotiations with the club.

Should a deal go through it won't be the first unexpected signing of the summer after Roy Beerens signed from Hertha Berlin despite close to signing for Bundesliga side Stuttgart, he opted for a move to the Madejski Stadium instead.

The former Real Madrid star featured in Spain between 2008 and 2010 before becoming a culthero at White Hart Lane after he signed for £8m in 2012, although with both clubs he was hit by severe injuries which stalled his playing time.

The Dutchman currently has one year still left on his current contract, but claimed in a recent interview he is still willing to earn his place with Real Betis despite being told he is unwanted.
