Real Madrid'sLuka Modric has been namedBest Midfielder of LaLiga Santander 2015/16, reaffirming the Croatian's reputablestanding in the Spanish football community.

Modric enjoyed an excellent campaign last season for Madrid as the club clinched a record-stretching 11th European crown, beating Atletico Madrid in the Champions League final.

The diminutive play-maker scored twice and assisted four during a remarkably consistent season during which he served as the midfield linchpin for both Rafael Benitez and Zinedine Zidane. Modric was also included on the long-list for FIFA's prestigious Ballon d'Or.

Modric last week committed his future at the Santiago Bernabeu, agreeing a new four-year contract with the club, taking him up to 2020.

Now 31, Modric has won two Champions Leagues, two European Supercups, the World Club Cup and one Copa del Rey since joining Madrid from Tottenham for €30m in 2012 and has grown to become a firm favourite among the club's supporters.

Modric's continued excellence has not gone unnoticed among the football world and Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs claimed the creative talent possesses the vision, technique and temperament to become the club's new Paul Scholes.

"For me Modric is the real successor to Paul Scholes. I would be happy if he was to come to United," Giggs said.

"They are very similar players and if it was up to me I would bring him to United."

However, Madrid fans will take great comfort in knowing that Modric has just agreed fresh terms with the Spanish giants and looks to be staying put - for now at least.
