REVEALED: Fans Choose Premier League Team Most Likely to Exit Champions League Early

Published on: 11 August 2016

Premier League fans have expressed their doubts over Leicester City's European prowess ahead of the new season, overwhelmingly voting the Foxes as the most likely Premier League team to make an early exit from the Champions League.

The Foxes are set to make their first appearance in Europe's top competition next season, having stormed to an unlikely Premier League title last season ahead of fellow top-four finishers Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester City.

Almost 80,000 90min readers voted in the poll, with 58% of them backingClaudio Ranieri's men to be the first English team to tumble out of the competition.

Tottenham are making their first appearance in the competition since the 2010/11 season, with fans labelling them as the second most likely side to shame the Premier League with an early exit.

21% of voters predicted that Champions League football would leave Wembley before any other stadium in England next season - but a surprisingly close 15% called an early exit for their north London rivals Arsenal; a bold prediction given the Gunners' faultless record of proceeding through the competition's first group stage every year in the 21st century.

Premier League fans were far and away more confident of Manchester City's success than any other side - with good reason, given last season's run to the semi-finals - just 6% predicting that Pep Guardiola would lead his side to an early exit.

The pessimism surrounding Leicester may be understandable given the general feeling that the Foxes punched above their weight last season, with their inexperience at the top level also a factor - but their position as top seeds could give them a favourable draw in the group stage compared to their rivals.

By contrast, Tottenham are likely to be the lowest-ranked English team in the competition thanks to their own inexperience at the top table of European football, without the seeding boost of winning last season's Premier League title.

Manchester City will play Steaua Bucharest on 16 August and 24 August for a place in the group stage of the competition, with the draw for the next round set to take place on 25 August.
