Robbie Savage Fears That Liverpool's New Youth Player Wage Cap Could Cost Them Next Steven Gerrard

Despite praising the club's stance on overpaying young players,BT Sports football pundit Robbie Savage has suggested that Liverpool's youth team wage cap could cost them the next 'Steven Gerrard'.

According to his column in theDaily Mirror, the former Birmingham City midfielder spoke aboutthe Reds' decision to limit the yearly wage of their youth players to £40k-per-year, in order to avoid giving young talent 'too much too soon.'

In the footballing world, extortionate amounts of money, it is claimed, can often lead youngsters astray in the game.

And Savage fears that this decision may allow rival clubs, who areyet to adopt this policy with their own youth teams, to persuade young talent to their academy systems due to the economical advantages for the players.

"For such a cap to be effective, all the Premier League's clubs would have to sign up for it," said Savage.

"If only three or four follow Liverpool's example, they may not be able to attract the best young players “ even those who grow up on their doorsteps.

"Good luck to Liverpool for making an important stand on principle.

"I hope it doesn't cost them the next Steven Gerrard or Jamie Carragher because they get enticed further afield by more money."

Up next for Liverpool in the Premier League are rivals Manchester United, as Jose Mourinho brings his side to Anfield for the campaign's first clash between these two English heavyweights on Monday Night Football.
