Roma weigh up approach for Juventus stalwart

Having lost Radja Nainggolan and Kevin Strootman over the summer, Roma are considering bolstering their midfield options with an approach for free agent Claudio Marchisio.

The Giallorossi offloaded Nainggolan and Strootman to Inter and Olympique Marseille respectively, whilst Maxime Gonalons was loaned out to Sevilla.

Roma did bring in Bryan Cristante, Javier Pastore and Steven Nzoni to play in the centre of midfield, but La Repubblica suggest that sporting director Monchi has contacted Marchisio as he looks to secure further depth.

Marchisio was released by Juventus last month after 12 years in the first team, and despite interest from Portuguese duo Benfica and Porto, as well as teams in Major League Soccer, remains without a club.

The 32-year-old has also drawn interest from fellow Serie A outfit Sampdoria, but Roma are believed to have begun negotiations with Marchisio on Thursday and would offer an immediate return to Champions League football.

After heavy criticism from fans following the sale of Strootman and Friday’s subsequent 2-1 defeat to AC Milan, the Roma hierarchy see former Italy international Marchisio as a cost effective alternative to the Dutchman.

With seven Scudetti and four Coppa Italia crowns, Marchisio scored 37 goals in 389 appearances for Juventus and represented the Bianconeri in both Serie A and B.
