Rtd. Referee G.K Manu calls for massive security at league centers

Kumasi-based retired referee G.K Manu says improved security is urgently needed at the various stadia in the country during matches in the Ghana Premier League.

Some Premier and Division One league referees have been victims of assault at match venues in the ongoing season.

Some fans, despite the directive for games to be played behind closed doors due to the rise in Covid-19 cases, managed to enter Nduom Sports Stadium and caused trouble after Elmina Sharks defeat against Medeama in matchday 15.

The Elmina Sharks fans stormed the field to attack referee Eric Owusu Bempah following Medeama’s 2-1 victory in the Ghana Premier League as they believe he masterminded their defeat.

Reacting to issues regarding officiating in the country, he called on the Ghana FA to vigilant in making sure that there is adequate security at match venues.

“Because fans are banned from going to the stadium security at match centres are not enough.  The FA must make sure there is adequate security during matches because of what happened in Elmina” he told Otec FM.

“I think the situation could have been different if there was a massive security. I’m much concern about security and I think there shouldn’t an incident before they act” he said.
