The Ghanaian conceded a penalty in the 60th minute of the quarter-final match at St. Mary's, giving Kevin de Bruyne the chance to make it 2-1 from the spot and open the door for two more goals.

Predictably, his performance drew some harsh criticism from Ghanaians after 90 minutes.

One fan stated that Salisu is too rash in his decision making.

Another one questioned Ghana's pursuit of the Southampton defender.

Others recognized his potential and mentioned that he should work on his tackling and decision making to reach his full potential.

On 12 August 2020, Salisu joined Premier League club Southampton from Valladolid for a fee worth £10.9 million.
