Serie A clamps down on captains over armband controversy

Club captains in the Italian top flight have received a warning over the use of personalised armbands, with the Lega Serie A ready to enforce regulations to stamp it out.

The Lega brought in new regulation for this season which stipulates that captain’s armbands must be completely white without any design, aside from the Serie A logo and the word ‘capitano’ printed across.

This has thus far not been enforced however, with the likes of Roma captain Daniele De Rossi and Atalanta skipper Alejandro Gomez using their own designs without punishment.

However, communication released on Tuesday confirmed that the Lega Serie A would take action against any captains failing to meet the regulations from this month onward.

“Any violation of Regulation CU 23 will be taken into account by the above body [Lega Serie A] starting from the next round of the Serie A TIM championship,” a statement from the Lega Serie A read.

In addition to De Rossi and Gomez, Fiorentina captain German Pezzella has also used personalised armbands this season. The Argentine centre-back had been using an armband that paid tribute to former Viola captain Davide Astori, who tragically passed away on the eve of a fixture against Udinese in March.
