South Africa v Ghana: Hearts of Oak skipper Fatawu Mohammed set to replace Yiadom at right-back

Published on: 05 September 2021

Ghana will play Bafana Bafana on Monday, September 6 at the FnB Stadium, and Hearts of Oak captain Fatawu Mohammed is likely to replace Reading man Yiadom at right-back.

Yiadom is part of the five players who did not travel to South Africa due to coronavirus travel restrictions.

South Africa is placed on the COVID-19 red list by England and the player will have to isolate for 10 days when he returns to his club if he travels to South Africa.

Fatawu Mohammed was part of Accra Hearts of Oak's double winning squad, the team won the 2020/2021 Ghana Premier League title and MTN FA Cup.

He was handed a late Black Stars call-up for the 2022 FIFA World Cup World qualifiers.

Ghana will try to return to the global tournament when the tournament takes place in the Asian country of Qatar next year. CK Akonnor's team traveled to South Africa to play on matchday two in Johannesburg on Monday in their attempt to qualify for their fourth World Cup appearance.

After missing the 2018 event in Russia, Ghana has set their sights on returning to the World Cup. The Black Stars reached the world showpiece in Germany 2006 where they were making their first appearance. They then went on to reach the Round of 16. They secured a qualification ticket for the South African 2010 edition.

This campaign saw them reach the quarter-finals, where they were defeated by Uruguay.

They made their third consecutive appearance at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil but they were forced to exit at the group stage for the first-time.
