Spalletti: Inter still have work to do

Despite Inter comfortably brushing Bologna aside, Nerazzurri coach Luciano Spalletti feels his side must improve a little if they are to reach their full potential.

A dogged Bologna side held out for 66 minutes before Radja Nainggolan struck, then Antonio Candreva and Ivan Perisic added late goals which made sure of Inter’s first Serie A win this season.

“We allowed Bologna very little and even before we took the lead, we had a lot of chances,” Spalletti told the press. “However, it is clear we have a little work to do, but we were up against a Bologna team that did what they had to do in the game, but we exploited the spaces well.”

Nainggolan made his long awaited Inter debut and was the man who helped break the deadlock with his first shot on target.

“He needs to improve his fitness,” Spalletti went on. “He can make those scything runs more than normal players can.

“I know that everyone loved the play before the goal, but for me, the performance was one where he gets on the other teams nerves.

“If you want to take shots, you have to have someone else to be in the right place and get the ball in the right areas to have shots.

“This is how you put opponents in trouble, even if they are organised.”

Before the match, Inter were dealt a blow as captain Mauro Icardi could only make the bench due to a muscle injury.

“[Because of Icardi’s injury] we had to find alternatives,” Spalletti said. “We have a season in which we will play two games a week, and today we were missing two important players [Icardi and Vrsaljko], but the team still managed to score.

“We strengthened where we needed to, so it is clear we have to win games and get ourselves into the thick of things when we are playing.

“Last year we were restricted, now we have more options which you have seen.”
