Stephens anticipates "massive" game

Southampton's Jack Stephens appreciates the "massive" importance of next weekend's home game against fellow strugglers Newcastle.

Saints go into the game just a point above the relegation zone while their visitors, Rafa Benitez's side are bottom of the table, yet to win this season.

Southampton haven't yet won at home but at least go into the St Mary's clash having ended a run of three straight losses.

They achieved that with a goalless draw away at Bournemouth, a performance that made a statement according to manager Mark Hughes.

However, they remain in trouble towards the bottom of the table and Stephens said it was time the players gave the home fans reason to get behind the team.

He told the club's official website: "Next week against Newcastle is massive, there's no getting away from that.

"It's a home game, in front of our fans, and we're aware we haven't won at home this season yet.

"So we need to give them something to cheer about, and we need to get three points."

Southampton are 21/20 to win next weekend with United 14/5 and the draw 9/4.

A win away at Crystal Palace was Saints only league win this season but they can at least approach the Newcastle game having held in-form Bournemouth.

They had chances to get all three points too with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg twice testing home keeper Asmir Begovic while Stuart Armstrong had a chance towards the end.

However, the need to get a positive result against Newcastle is highlighted by the fact Saints go to champions Manchester City the following weekend.

Before that they face Leicester away in the fourth round of the EFL Cup. Saints are 25/1 to win the trophy this year with Leicester 16/1.
