Stoke City Midfielder Giannelli Imbula Names the Premier League Star He Wants to Emulate

Published on: 28 November 2016

Stoke City midfielder Giannelli Imbula has set his sights high in the Premier League, claiming that he wants to emulate Manchester City star Yaya Toure's success.

Imbula, 24, made his first start in two-and-a-half months in Sunday's 1-0 win over Watford, and he confessed his delight at being back in the side.

The £18.3m record signing played well alongside Charlie Adam in central-midfield, nullifying the threat of Watford's Capoue and Pereyra.

The Daily Starquote him as saying:"I'm happy to be back in the team and I have waited a long time. I have done the same thing as Toure.

The difference is that he scored twice on his comeback match, but I have not scored.

But he now seems to be playing more. I hope I can do the same. Now I have had the chance I want to play more.

Imbula was one of the players blamed for Stoke's poor start to the season, eventually being dropped by boss Mark Hughes and sent to the Under-23 side.

He added:It was difficult watching the others play. That was the most difficult thing.

But I closed my mouth and worked hard. It's a big relief but I believe in myself and I know I will always give my best.

I prefer to play a whole match with the U23s than to not play for two months. It's better to play to keep fit."

The Potters will be hoping to go back into the top-half of the table this weekend as they prepare to face Burnley, who suffered their seventh defeat of the season on Saturday after losing 2-1 to Manchester City.
