Stoke City's Geoff Cameron Expresses Delight at Playing in New Midfield Role

Published on: 19 October 2016

Stoke City defender Geoff Cameron has admitted that he is delighted with his new holding-midfield role, claiming that he is 'getting better and better'.

The 31-year-old American international has been the ultimate utility player since a 2012 switch form Houston Dynamo, playing most of his time at right-back and centre-back, and now in midfield.

However, he admits that he feels more comfortable in the middle, which is where Mark Hughes played him in the 2-0 win over Sunderland last weekend.

I'm just trying to stay in the team every weekend and stay focused. I've played different positions and I always feel like I'm getting better and better and more comfortable the longer I stay in the same one consistently." He told theStoke Sentinel.

If I have to transfer over “ like when Phil Bardsley went down on Saturday “ it's not a problem. I'll always do what I can to help the team. But right now we seem to have a good understanding with one another, a good formation and we're on the up. We've got to keep that focus and make sure we pick up three points at Hull."

WithGiannelli Imbula left out of the recent squad and Joe Allen playing in a more offensive role, Mark Hughes has decided to utilise two holding midfielders with Cameron and Glenn Whelan protecting the defence.

And Cameron believes the switch works ideally, as himself and Whelan can quickly break up the play before passing it to creative players likeXherdan Shaqiri and Marko Arnautovic.

I think we're a little bit more defence-minded. I'm filling in, sitting in the hole along with Glenn, and as soon as we can get the ball we can release the likes of Joe and the forwards with Shaq, Marko and our attack-minded guys. We can let them do their thing offensively and it seems to get them more time on the ball to be creative and that's all you can ask for." He added.

Cameron went on to hail Saturday's brace-scoring midfielder Joe Allen, who has now scored five goals in his last four appearances or club and country.

We all knew he's a very good player and obviously the manager has been keeping a close eye on Wales. For me, he's a great team-mate, a good guy on and off the field. He's a guy you want to play alongside. If he's going to lay himself out there, you will too. That's the good characters that we need."
