He was one of a number of Manchester United players tonot turn up at Stamford Bridge, and was shown right up as he was directly involved in conceding all four of the hosts' goals in the 4-0 defeat.

Manchester United fans won't have been too thrilled with his contribution, especially given he was being talked up as one of the Premier League's top defenders under former manager Louis van Gaal just a few months ago.

Current manager Jose Mourinho, however, read him the riot act on two separate occasions on the day. That's according to theMirror, who report that Mourinho dished out some Alex Ferguson-style hairdryer treatment to the England international defenderat both half time and full time.

Mourinho was reported to be incensed with Smalling, who he felt should have shown stronger leadership skills given he was wearing the captain's armband. Smalling also flattered to deceive in defence, as he failed to clear a through ball which Pedro met with within 30 seconds for the first goal, and N'Golo Kante waltzed past him for the fourth.
