The Statistic That Proves Wayne Rooney Isn't Finished at Manchester United Just Yet

Published on: 06 November 2016

That Wayne Rooney, what a waste of space.

The England and Manchester United captain has really been getting it in the neck this season for his ludicrous levels of underperformance. He's spent a chunk of his campaign on the bench and has been struggling for form for far, far too long.

In contrast, there's Mesut Ozil. Last season's 'King of Assists' has actually been scoring himself this year, though he was unable to make the difference as Arsenal drew with Tottenham in Sunday's north London derby. Remarkably, Ozil finds himself nowhere near the top of this season's assist charts, as he's mustered only one in his 11 Premier League games so far.

An interesting fact though has emerged following the weekend's round of fixtures. Rooney made his way back into the team for the previously forlorn United in Sunday's trip to Swansea, and showed signs that he's actually not totally dead as a footballer after all. Rooney was sharp, direct and clever, and played a big part in United's 3-1 victory.

#PL Assists this season:
De Bruyne 6
Coutinho 5
Pedro 5
Matic 5
Lallana 5
Payet 4
Zaha 4
Bolasie 4
Rooney 4

Ozil 1

He mustered two assists in one game as he was awarded the freedom of South Wales by Swansea's horrible defence, taking his total Premier League assist tally to FOUR. That's quadruple the registered amount of Ozil. Blimey.

Rooney doesn't quite top the assist charts at the moment - that honour belongs to Manchester City's Kevin de Bruyne - while Chelsea's Nemanja Matic surprisingly sits behind the Belgian with a total of five.

Nevertheless, this might just be the proof that Wayne Rooney, aged 31, is not quite finished yet.
