Thomas Tuchel Reveals He May Yet Appoint Marco Reus as Borussia Dortmund Captain

Borussia Dortmund manager Thomas Tuchel has said he will look at the club captaincy issue following the Bundesliga's winter break.

Marcel Schmelzer was appointed club captain following Mats Hummels' departure to Bayern Munich.

Reus had acted as vice-captain under Hummels, but the long-term nature of his injury woes meant he was not considered when Tuchel made the decision to hand the honour over to Schmelzer, the vastly-experienced left-back who has been with the club since 2008.

Speaking after Dortmund's win over Borussia Monchengladbach, Tuchel said:"He wasn't available when we decided who would be appointed as captain and at that point, it wasn't clear when he would return."

"We didn't want to put a burden on the comeback process by starting a discussion about the captaincy, so it was clear that 'Schmelle' would receive it."

"Now Marco is back and he returned in fantastic fashion. The presence and perseverance he showed in the last weeks prior to his comeback were exceptional," Tuchel added.

"You can see in the way he returned that [the captaincy] isn't a topic or issue among the players. We might review this topic in the future, but definitely not before the winter break."

However, rather amusingly, Reus gave a decidedly brusque response when asked if he wanted to be appointed captain."I don't care. We're all captains on this team," the 27-year-old said.

Reus has exploded back into action following a lengthy layoff after sustaining a groin injury in May's DFB Pokal final defeat to Bayern in May, scoring two goals and notching four assists in three appearances since his return.
