Timing of stripping off Black Stars captaincy was wrong - Asamoah Gyan

Former Black Stars captain, Asamoah Gyan says the timing of losing his captaincy was wrong.

Ahead of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations [AFCON] in Egypt, Andre Ayew was named as the new skipper for the side as Gyan was handed the general captain role by the then head coach of the side, Kwesi Appiah.

The decision by the coach forced Gyan to announce his retirement from the team but the former Sunderland and Udinese striker rescinded after a presidential intervention.

Speaking in an interview, Gyan admitted that he had no issue with the decision of Kwesi Appiah to stripe him of the Black Stars captaincy but questioned the timing.

"Kwesi Appiah flew to Dubai and told me he has chosen me as his new captain and I don't have any issue if he [Kwesi Appiah] decides to stripe off the captaincy but the timing was wrong," he told Dan Kweku Yeboah TV in an interview.

"His explanation and reason for his decision was not tangible to me and so I told him he should leave me out of his team but he insisted that I am still part of his plans," he added.

Gyan, who is currently clubless after leaving Legon Cities two years ago is Ghana's all-time leading goal scorer with 51 goals and Africa's top goal scorer with six goals.

The 37-year-old featured at the 2006, 2010 and 2014 World Cup in Germany, South Africa and Brazil respectively.
