TOKYO 2020 Qualifiers: Kenya knocks out Ghana’s Black Queens

Published on: 08 October 2019

The Black Queens of Ghana will miss out on playing at the Olympic Games for the third consecutive time after losing 1-0 on aggregate to the Harambee Starlets of Kenya in the second qualifying round to Tokyo.

Ghana went into the match with pressure to win at all cost especially after failing to record the needed result when they hosted their opponent at the Accra Sports Stadium last week.

An unimpressive first-half showing from both sides ended in a goalless draw with neither sets of attackers looking anywhere close to finding the back of the net.

The teams resumed the second half in hopes of improving their performance in order to break the deadlock. That did not happen after 90 minutes even though both managers brought in players from the bench.

The match eventually crawled into extra time to decide who goes through to the next round of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

The Harambee Starlets upped their game and took the lead courtesy a penalty kick converted by Shikangwa on the 99th minute.

They managed to hold on and ended up beating Ghana to cruise to the third round of the Olympic Qualifiers with a 1-0 aggregate victory.

What that means is that the Black Queens' hopes of making a representation in Tokyo have been shuttered.
