Tottenham Star Christian Eriksen Reportedly Nearing New 5-Year Contract at White Hart Lane

Tottenham star Christian Eriksen is reportedly close to extending his stay at White Hart Lane, with a new five-year contract said to be nearing completion, according to theDaily Mail.

It is understood talks have been ongoing between the 24-year-old's representatives and club officials for much of the summer, with just two years remaining on his current deal, which was signed on his arrival at the club back in 2013.

Reports suggest talks stalled when the Denmark international demanded £150,000 a week on a new deal- around five times the amount he earns on his current contract.

But it is understood those demands have been lowered significantly. The Daily Mail report that the former Ajax midfielder will still be one of the top earners at the club when he signs the new deal that will reportedly fetch him around £80,000 a week at White Hart Lane.

He was one of Spurs' star performances last season when they came agonisingly close to the Premier League title. But his performances in the Premier League this season so far has indicated a sharp decline from the attacking midfielder.

His manager Mauricio Pochettino, however, admits that though Eriksen is going through a "difficult" period, he remains an integral part of his plans.

"Maybe it is a difficult period for him," Pochettino said. "This is a player with real commitment to the club and sometimes maybe your performance is not the performance you expect.

"But we are very happy with him, he is a great player and very important for us."
