U-23 Afcon: Coach Michael Osei defends decision to drop locally based players

Published on: 18 October 2019

Black Meteors deputy coach Michael Osei has revealed the reason why they dropped locally based players for foreign based players in their recent games.

According to Osei, he says the home-based players are not active and fit enough to play for Ghana at the tournament due to the absence of domestic football in the country.

Speaking to Atinka sports, coach said: "The teams we are going to face are active and have prepared for more than five (5) months, so we can’t gamble and use our local based players for such international tournament, no way."

"In any case we didn’t use the locally based players in any of our past matches, Togo, Gabon and Algeria.

"We didn’t use them, the foreign-based players played all these matches because they are active, I don’t see the qualms about this look is not easy as people see it, If you’ve been a footballer before, you will understand we can’t use the locally based players for such international tournament," he ended.

The 2019 U-23 Africa Cup of Nations tournament commences on November 8 and ends on November 22 2019 in Egypt.
