U-23 Afcon: Ghana deserved a place at the Olympic Games – Coach Tanko

Published on: 22 November 2019

Black Meteors head coach Ibrahim Tanko says his tea deserves a place at next year’s Olympic Games due to their performance at on-going Africa U-23 Cup of Nations in Egypt.

Ghana failed to book an automatic qualification to Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games after suffering a 4-2 penalty defeat (2-2 full time) to Côte d'Ivoire in the semi-finals on Tuesday.

Ghana will now play South Africa in the third place playoff on Friday afternoon at the Cairo International Stadium and a win over Bafana Bafana will help secure the final ticket to the global event in Tokyo.

Coach Tanko believes that his side’s performance in the competition warrants a place in Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

"Based on our performance in this competition, I believe we deserve to go to Tokyo ( Olympic Games) but we have to really fight for it tomorrow and am sure that the boys will be up to the task."

"It’s our last game in the tournament and it’s also a game that can qualify us to the Olympics so we will put in our best efforts to secure the ticket.

"We know it won’t be easy because both teams have been good in the tournament", the Ghana U-23 coach said at the Pre- match press conference on Thursday.
