Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce has explained why he kept Ghana striker Jordan Ayew on the bench for Saturday's encounter with Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Ayew got injured during the international break after the Black Stars 0-0 draw with Uganda and according to Bruce, the same injury kept him out of action on Saturday.
The forward overcame the injury to make the Villa's' match-day squad for the clash with Wolves but watched the entire game from the Villa bench.
"With hindsight, the reason I didn’t play Jordan Ayew and Leandro Bacuna was because they had huge, big flights," Bruce told his club's official website.
"Mile Jedinak had one too, from Australia – and came back on Friday morning.
"Maybe I should have left him alone. I wanted his experience. It was a mistake from me."
Villa lie 20th on the table ahead of Tuesday's trip to Reading where Ayew is expected to return to the starting line-up.
