VVV-Venlo coach wants Jonathan Opoku and teammates to put games to bed early

Interim head coach for Dutch Eredivisie side VVV-Venlo, Jay Driessen has called on his players including Ghanaian international Jonathan Opoku to psyche themselves up and learn to put games to bed early on match days.

The gaffer recently took over the club to get the team back on track following a very difficult start to the ongoing season.

Under his watch, things are gradually picking up after guiding the team to two wins out of three games in the last couple of weeks. Their only defeat came against in-form AZ Alkmaar when they lost by a goal to nil.

Lat Saturday, VVV-Venlo was in action against FC Emmen in a match week 16 fixture of the Dutch Eredivisie.

Ghana’s Jonathan Opoku opened the scoring for the home team just 7 minutes into the first half.

Though Emmen was reduced to 10 men on the 71st minute, Venlo did not take advantage and struggled before netting a second goal five minutes into injury time.

In an interview with FOX Sports at the end of the match, VVV-Venlo coach Jay Driessen bemoaned the lack of potency of his players in front of goal and joked that he would have shot some of the players if he had a gun.

"We could have put the game in the slot earlier. You can't do much about it from the couch. I sometimes say: If I had a gun, I might have shot a few. But I don't think I'll be like that anymore many players”, the interim manager said.

He added, "I don't think this is a coincidence. I saw another team today that struggled to win the last minute. This is the way we have to grab points. We play real football and play to our ability. "

Jonathan Opoku lasted 76 minutes of the match before his place was taken by John Yeboah.
