WAFU Cup of Nations: Black Starlets coach Ben Fokuo reveals mood in camp after exiting tournament

Black Starlets head coach Ben Fokuo says the players are disappointed to suffer elimination from the on-going WAFU U-17 Cup of Nations in Togo.

The Black Starlets needed only one point to make it to the next round of the competition but Ghana lost 3-1 to Cote D'Ivoire to bow out.

Ghana failed to make the final of the competition for a second straight tournament after reaching the stage at Niger 2019.

"The players are disappointed and I think that is football," coach Fokuo told ghanafa.org

"They were behind us hoping we win and make the country proud and that was what we were also hoping to do by qualifying for the AFCON and God willing for the World Cup but it didn’t happen."

With Ghana unable to go all the way to book qualification for the 2021 U17 Afcon in Morocco, they are set to miss out on the continental gathering for the second straight edition.

The four semi-finalists at the Afcon ought to be representing the continent at the U17 World Cup later this year but the latter tournament has been cancelled due to safety concerns over the coronavirus pandemic.

Ghana are two-time winners (1995 and 1999) of the U17 Afcon and two-time champions (1991 and 1995) of the U17 World Cup.
