Watford 1-0 Hull: Hornets Move Past Man Utd in the Table With Lucky Win Against Struggling Hull

Published on: 28 October 2016

Watford beat struggling Hull City 1-0 at Vicarage Road on Saturday to move above Manchester Unitedto seventh place on the table.

The opening minutes of the matchsaw the home side nearly take an early lead, with Troy Deeney getting a great opportunity to score his 100th goal for the club just a minute from kick-off. He could not catch Nordin Amrabat's cross, however.

Younes Kaboul andRoberto Pereyra both hit the woodwork just a few minutes later.

There was nothing more to talk about in the first half, apart from Deeney heading a chance over the bar in the 43rd minute after Amrabat's shot bounced into the ground toward the far post.

The teams headed into halftime with no goals scored and a 0-0 scoreline.

The second half started with a bit more zip, and the game looked more open, with both sides having a real go at each other. Will Keane found himself one on one with Heurelho Gomes around the 52-minute mark, but his shot was way too soft and was easily saved by the stopper.

Keane was hauled off 12 minutes from time, and David Meyler came on to replace him, with Mike Phelan seemingly intent on keeping a point. However, the Tigers would be undone just five minutes later as an own goal from Michael Dawson gave Walter Mazzarri's side the advantage.

Dawson was quite unfortunate to contribute to his side's downfall. Daryl Janmaat's cross was flicked on by Pereyra, and just clipped the Hull captain to find itself in the back of the net.

There was a bit of confusion as to who got the last touch, and it was initially thought that Deeney had finally gotten his 100th Hornets goal, but replays showed that it came off Dawson, whose look could have said it all anyway.

Watford were able to hold on to their slender lead until the 90th minute plus the four minutes of stoppage time to take their season tally to a very respectable 15 points.
