Watford's Lofty Yellow Card Tally Doesn't Faze Manager Walter Mazzarri

Published on: 25 October 2016

Watford manager Walter Mazzarri is not one bit bothered by the fact that his side have racked up more yellow cards this season than any other team in the Premier League.

The Italian, formerly of Inter Milan and Napoli, seemed unmoved when he discovered that his team sit atop the disciplinary table.

The Hornets have accumulated a total of 25 yellow cards so far this campaign, two more than any other team. Add that to their one red card, and Watford have the worst disciplinary record of any Premier League team this term.

But Mazzarri insisted that the bookings his team have picked up are not cynical nor serious, in his words; his side are 'just fighting for the ball'.

I didn't know [we were top], Mazzarri remarked when speaking toWD Sport.

I really don't see any problem. If, of course, there are serious fouls or punches, then I will be angry, but if we are just fighting for the ball, then I don't see any problem.

Mazzarri's men must be careful, with a number of players teetering dangerously close to a suspension.

Jose Holebas is one of these - having picked up four yellow cards already this season after only nine games, he is one more booking away from an automatic one-game suspension.

Valon Behrami and Troy Deeney, currently on three yellow cards a piece, are themselvestwo away from such a ban.

Referee Jonathan Moss will be in charge of Watford's game against Hull Cityon Saturday. He has refereed the Hornets once before this season, in their game at home to Chelsea, where he gave out seven yellow cards.

Mazzarri's team will therefore have to be on their best behaviour at the weekend.
