West Ham 1-1 Stoke City: Super Sub Bojan Grabs Potters Deserved Point at the London Stadium

Published on: 04 November 2016

Bojan Krkic's 75th minutestrike helpedStoke City to ahardearned point withWest Ham on Saturday afternoon.

The substitute's smart volley cancelled out Glenn Whelan's own goal earlier in the second half, as the home sides' struggles at their new stadium continued as they put in another insipid performance.

Much of the pre-match build up had centred on how the London Stadium's security measures would cope for the game, after West Ham's previous home match against Chelsea had seen violent clashes between both sets of supporters.

Mercifully an increased police presence inside the ground help keep the waters calm and both sets of fans observed the minutes silence to commemorate the upcoming remembrance day impeccably.

On the field, both teams made numerous changes to their starting XI's; most notably Andre Ayew making only his second start for the home side after his record transfer in the summer, whilst Stoke ace Xherdan Shaqiri missed out through injury, with Johnathan Walters taking his place on the wing.

It was a fairly drab first half, with the visitors just shading proceedings. Joe Allen ballooned the ball over fromthe edge of the Hammers' penalty area, whilst Walters was unable to pick out a teammate with his low cross.

The home side had little fluency to their game andAngelo Ogbonna's close range header was the closest they came to scoring, although the defender will feel he should have done better having thumped his effort straight at Potters' keeper Lee Grant.

Despite finding themselves in some good positions, Stoke were unable to find that killer instinct in the final third of the pitchand they were nearly made to pay on the stroke of half time when Dimitri Payet grazed the roof of the net with a close range free kick.

Awful first half. Slow, ponderous & without much game plan. We're allowing Stoke to slow the game to a snails pace. Liven up lads!

The second half started in a similar vain, with the away side looking the more competent on the ball without causing much alarm for the West Ham defence.

Phil Bardsley's speculative effort from range flew just over whilstat the other end,Pedro Obiang tested Grant with a low drive from the edge of the area.

With Slaven Bilic making changes on the hour mark, a brief shift in momentum towards the Hammers led to the breakthrough.

A spell of pressure from the home sidesaw Payet's low cross from the left, divertedin off the near post by the away side's Glenn Whelan, who appeared to know verylittle about his own goal.

Stoke nearly found a quick response five minutes laterwhen Charlie Adam's close range free kick was bundled goalwards by Bruno Martins Indi but luckily for the hosts goalkeeper Adrian's brilliant reflex save kept the ball out.

The Hammers' keeper quickly turned from hero to villain however as he inexplicably came flying off his line to get to a bouncing ball on the edge of the area. With the keeper caught in no-man's land, Walters was able to lob the ball over himand substitute Bojan calmly volleyed into an empty net.

Both sides now pushed for a late winner as the final whistle approached. Antonio was inches away from grabbing his second of the game but was unable to get a touch on a low cross.

Stoke themselves went close to nicking the win when Charlie Adam's 25 yardfree kick nearly sneaked throughAdrian but thankfully for the home side he was able to smother the ball behind for a corner.

The full time whistle came not long after Adam's effort with neither side really doing enough to take the three points. In truth, it was fitting that both sides took a point away from a match that lacked chances and any realquality throughout.

Team news! What do you think of these starting line ups?
