Wolfsburg Ready to Offer Memphis Depay Escape Route From Manchester United Nightmare

Published on: 15 October 2016

Memphis Depay's days as a Manchester United player may be numbered after fresh reports emerged linking the Dutch winger with a move to Wolfsburg.

According to German publicationBILD, the Bundesliga club are weighing up a potential move for the winger who has failed to live up to his billing as one of the most exciting talents in European football since joining the Premier League club from PSV Eindhoven 16 months ago in a £25m deal that attracted significant fanfare at the time.

Depay fell out of favour at Old Trafford under Louis van Gaal and has yet to make an impression on Jose Mourinho, mainly starting games from the bench. Wolfsburg are said to have pinpointed the 22-year-old as a potential candidate for turning their own season around after a poor start to their Bundesliga campaign.

Tipped to be a central figure for United under Van Gaal, Depay has struggled with form and fitness during his time in the Premier League. He vowed to train harder and alter his diet in order to increase his sharpness and live up to his pre-United billing as an explosive, devastating attacker, but so far it has not paid dividends.

While Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba have stolen most of the headlines this season for United, Memphis has largely become a forgotten man. With the club reportedly telling Mourinho he will have to sell players before he can buy again, the Portuguese coach may decide it is time to cut the winger from the paybill.
