World Cup 2022: Germany labour to draw 1-1 with Spain to keep Group E open

Published on: 27 November 2022

All four countries in Group E have a chance of qualifying for the knockout stage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup depending on the results from the final round of games in the group phase of the tournament.

This follows Germany’s hard-fought 1-1 draw with Spain on Sunday night.

The Germans shockingly lost their opening Group E game 2-1 to Japan. On the other hand, Spain had an explosive start to the tournament after mauling Costa Rica 7-0.

Today, the Germans locked horns with the free-scoring Spanish national team in need of a win or risk an early flight back home.

Although Germany would score in the first half through an Antonio Rudiger header, it was ruled out for offside.

After the break, Spain manager Luis Enrique made a number of changes that worked for him.

Substitute Alvaro Morata equalised in the 62nd minute with an assist from full-back Jordi Alba.

On the brink of elimination, Germany head coach Hansi Flick also looked to his bench. Fortunately, he found the answers he sought after.

Substitute Niclas Füllkrug scored with a powerful effort in the 83rd minute to restore parity to the game.

Despite the push for a winning goal, it never came for either side as the game ended 1-1.

With the result, Spain stays top of the Group E standings with four points. Germany are bottom of the log with just a point and must beat Costa Rica convincingly in the final group game to advance to the next stage of the tournament.
