World Cup 2022: Ghana not looking for revenge against Uruguay in final group game

Published on: 30 November 2022

Black Stars are focused on beating Uruguay in their final group game at the 2022 World Cup and will not be seeking for revenge on Friday.

Ghana were eliminated by Uruguay on penalties in South Africa, having seen Asamoah Gyan miss an extra-time spot-kick after Luis Suarez was sent off for handball.

Black Stars are currently second in Group H and will take on the South American side on Friday. A win or draw will see Ghana through to the last 16 of the competition.

"Everyone felt bad but for me I just want to get to the next stage,” Andre Ayew told reporters in Qatar.

“Revenge or not, we would go with the same determination and desire to win because we want to get to the next stage.”

“I am not looking back, I don’t want to focus on the past,” added the 32-year-old forward.

Thomas Partey had a similar message.

"But now we have another chance and we have to work harder to qualify,” he said.

"We have to forget what happened, this is a new time.”

Ghana coach Otto Addo played down the significance of the rematch.

"I’m a strong believer if you don’t seek too much for revenge for these kind of things, sometimes you get even more blessings," he said.
