World Cup 2022: South Korea coach Paulo Bento suspended after red card in Ghana clash

Published on: 29 November 2022

South Korea coach Paulo Bento is suspended ahead of their final Group H game against Portugal in the World Cup.

The Portuguese trainer received red card in Korea’s 3-2 defeat against the Black Stars on Monday afternoon.

Bento confronted referee Anthony Taylor who handled the much-anticipated clash for failing to allow his team take a corner kick before ending the game.

As a result, the English referee showed the trainer a red card, preventing from being on the bench against his native country Portugal on Friday.

“Coach Bento is not allowed to enter the locker room during the match against Portugal. He takes the bus to the stadium, but he has to watch the game from the VIP seat. " An official of South Korea explained.

He added, "Whether or not additional punishment has yet to be confirmed. Generally, it is a one-game punishment like a player. Coach Bento can attend the official training session against Portugal and until the press conference." Head coach Sergio Costa will sit on the bench in place of Bento on match day.

The West African powerhouse earned an important 3-2 win over South Korea to boost their chances of progressing to the round of 16.

The Black Stars must avoid defeat to secure qualification to the knockout phase at the mundial.

Ghana took a 2-0 lead in the first half thanks to goals from Southampton defender Mohammed Salisu and Ajax's Mohammed Kudus.

However, Ghana fans' raucous celebrations at halftime were dampened by South Korea's comeback after the break.

Cho Kyu-sung, the top scorer in his domestic league, levelled the game after 61 minutes with two stunning headers in three minutes.

But Ghana's impressive Kudus added a final twist by thumping in a third goal to break South Korea's hearts.
