Xabi Alonso: 'I Have a Weakness for Luka Modric, He Does Everything Well'

Ex-Real Madrid star Xabi Alonso has lavished praise upon former team-mate and current Bernabeu hero, revealing that he has a 'weakness' for the Croatian's world class ability on the pitch.

"I have a weakness for Modric," Alonso admitted to Marca.

Alonso and Modric were team-mates for two years in Madrid after the latter joined from Tottenham in 2012. Alonso, now very much in the twilight of his career, moved on to Bayern Munich in 2014 but still holds his old colleague in very high esteem.

"He is a key, fundamental player that is shown when he's on the pitch and when he's missing. He does everything well - passing, dribbling, marking, everything. Since he settled into the team he has been instrumental."

That was certainly something that was regularly said about Real Madrid's 2014/15 campaign when Modric was limited to just 16 La Liga games as a result of injury.

Barcelona claimed the title by two points and manager Carlo Ancelotti lost his job just 12 months after delivering La Decima in the Champions League.

But it's not just Modric who came in for praise from Alonso. He also has a soft spot for Toni Kroos, with whom he eventually swapped places with when the German star made the switch from Bayern to Real in 2014 shortly before Alonso was headed in the opposite direction.

"Kroos is class, in the control he gives and through his passing range," he said.

Modric and Kroos are both set to be in action as Real resume their Champions League campaign with a group game away against Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday night.
