The north east club saw off Preston 4-1 on Monday night to ensure a top-two finish in the Championship.
Two goals from Ayoze Perez were added to by Christian Atsu and Matt Ritchie. Preston had made it 1-1 thanks to Jordan Hugill but didn't help their cause when Paul Gallagher was dismissed in the second-half for a handball on the line.
